Spring is about to be sprung on the unsuspecting masses of the Midwest and East coast who will enjoy the 6 hours of nice weather before it all turns to an insufferable sweltering Summer heat.
I might have done this in the past, but The Hungry Detective would like to thank Fantastic Fiction and the Bloodstained Bookshelf for being the primarily resources from which this list is drawn up. Cheers, mates!
EXPIRATION DATE - Duane Swierczynski - March 30
I mentioned this in my Winter Preview as well. I dig most of what Duane has written so I don't have a problem giving EXPIRATION DATE another plug. Read this dude!
INFAMOUS - Ace Atkins - April 15
Baby Face Nelson is the focus of Mr. Atkins next reality based fiction. I really thought the WHITE SHADOW was one of the finest things I read in 2009. It reminds me that I need to get back to WICKED CITY and DEVIL'S GARDEN.
THE THIRD RAIL - Michael Harvey - April 20
Chicago. What are you gonna do? I'm a sucker for this place. Funny, but as a 'real' place which I have visited on several occasions, I have never warmed up to the city.
THE GOD OF THE HIVE - Laurie R. King - April 27
I am down a couple books in this series, but I always look forward to a new Mary Russell.
DIE TWICE - Andrew Grant - May 11
EVEN was one of the bigger debuts of 2009. I resisted that book at every turn, and without a real reason I might add.
HOUSE OF SECRET - Richard Hawke - May 11
I have not read this guy in a long time. And when I did his name was Tim Cockey. I have not read any of the previous novel written under the Richard Hawke pen name. Mr. Cockey was one of the few comedic Crime Fiction writers that has produced at a consistently high level. The 'Hawke' books always looked a bit more serious.
THE NEAREST EXIT - Olen Steinhauer - May 11
Just finished THE TOURIST and it is a flat out 4/5 masterpiece. That right, 4/5 masterpiece. I have a couple reservations, but glad I have finally gotten on board with this author.
JUNKYARD DOG - Craig Johnson - May 27
Like Mr. Steinhauer, here is another author I inexplicably put of reading. JUNKYARD DOG is the 6th book in the Walt Longmire series. Usually when I am this far behind in a series I don't even try to catch up. But, I read THE COLD DISH last year and loved it. I'm sure the effort to read everything will be richly rewarding.
SPIES OF THE BALKANS - Alan Furst - June 15
Mr. Furst's book are not big on action. But they are exciting never the less. His book's are slow reads that reveal them self with Mr. Furst's exacting detail. Great, great stuff.
And the best of the rest.... KNOWN TO EVIL - Walter Mosley; STILL MIDNIGHT - Denise Mina; NOWHERE TO RUN - C.J. Box; ONE WAS A SOLDIER - Julia Spencer-Fleming; THE NIGHT WATCHMAN - Mark Mynheir; DEAD IN THE WATER - Meredith Cole; A CURTAIN FALLS - Stephanie Pintoff
