The Hungry Detective

I find the machismo of  UK crime cinema to be a bit tiresome..... yes... I know... Bruen hails from Ireland... so forgive the over generalization. If MICHAEL COLLINS was not such a snooze of a film I might be inclined to make a greater distinction.  In any case, the work of Ken Bruen is a notable hole in the Crime Fiction education of The Hungry Detective. Lets see if that changes in 2011. Don't hold your breath.....

Ahhhhhhh...... the McConaughey. I happen to think that this is pretty good casting for Mickey Haller, but it is all based on looks. My problem with 'the McConaughey' is that the guy just lacks gravitas. He is a light weight.... always will be. What sells the movie for me is the fantastic supporting cast.

Well this brightens an otherwise dull Thursday afternoon. Scorsese's adaptation of Mr. Lehane's SHUTTER ISLAND looks a little crazy. Here is hoping that with his Oscar win for THE DEPARTED Mr. Scorsese will have a little fun. As Scorsese is huge movie fanatic, I'm hoping for a good old Haunted House movie like the ones Val Lewton used to make. Although Lewton didn't make a Haunted House film per se, he did make movies about things that go bump in the night.

File this under things I didn't even know were happening. This has the look of a straight to video release. On the positive side I am generally pro Gary Oldman. Thanks to Jared Case and The Rap Sheet for making me aware.

The Foreign Desk at The Hungry Detective has alerted me that the massively acclaimed THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO was recently been adapted for the screen in its home country of Sweden. In fact, the second in the series, THE GIRL WHO PLAYED WITH FIRE is already in post-production with the third book in the trilogy filming for a a December 2009 release. Check out... the un-subtitled... trailer and cross your fingers that this gets a bigger US push than JAR CITY did a year ago. I recently finished Fred Vargas's book Have Mercy On Us All. A book I enjoyed greatly by the way. I don't know what prompted me, but I checked over at IMDB to see if any of her work had been translated to the screen. As luck would have it Have Mercy On Us All has been translated to the big screen. Another, Wash This Blood Clean From My Hands , seemingly made it to the small screen. With the very successful art-house run of the Harlan Coben novel, Tell No One , I am crossing my fingers that this film will at the very least make an appearance on DVD. Warning there are no English subtitles.... and maybe a quick flash of nudity. Which is either an enticement or reason to report this blog. Enjoy.

My nineteenth year on this earth has finally been put to song. So much of this song is spooky that I dare not speak out loud about it. Lovely and Terrible. Where is the Crime Fiction? Not today dear reader. The Courteeners - Not Nineteen Forever I'm even considering buying the UK single ... yes they still have those over there.
